Learning-focused Relationships: Promoting Growth and Developing Professional Relationships

Virtual Course

This interactive seminar explores the important relationship between educational leaders, mentors, and coaches and the colleagues they support. This course develops the skills and knowledge to increase capacity and decrease dependency across a wide-range of experience and at all levels of performance.

The course combines virtual and independent learning, as follows:

Two virtual sessions of two hours each over two days. (two sessions each day) with four hours of independent, asynchronous work, some during a learning break on the teaching day and some required between the two days rounds out the blend of directed and self-directed learning. Participants will leave with practical tools, specific templates, and technical tips for developing learning-focused relationships between colleagues to increase professional expertise. The course will include strategiesand models for both virtual and face to face environments.

Participants will learn to:

  • Balance the three functions of learning-focused relationships: offering support, creating cognitive challenge, and facilitating professional vision.
  • Navigate across four stances on a continuum of interaction from most to least directive, exploring specific strategies related to each stance for customizing learning-focused conversations.
  • Apply verbal and non-verbal tools for increasing receptivity, confidence and skills with instructional decision-making and problem solving.
  • Facilitate structured planning, reflecting and problem-solving conversations that maximize time and provide a focus on continuous growth.
